About Us

The Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS) which forms part of the Institute of Engineering and Transport (IET) of the Malta College for Arts Science and Technology (MCAST) is a premier Maritime Training provider based in Malta but with a strong international dimension.

The CMS offers a range of maritime educational programmes pegged at the different levels of the European Qualification Framework. The spectrum ranges from training required for the deck officers of ocean going vessels and super yachts, to training for marine engineering and also ancillary courses such as in the specialised field of oceanography. The centre is set up in a state of the art multi million euro facility through which to cater for local and international demands of the maritime industry. Training is provided through qualified and experienced lecturers with a proven track record and also fully approved by the Malta Flag under the STCW convention.

Certificates achieved through the Centre for Maritime Studies are internationally accepted and achieving MCAST certification is recognised by hundreds of students as being the best way to kick start a career in the navigation, marine engineering, management of ships as well as getting a head start when seeking to achieve an executive position within the maritime industry.

The Institute of Engineering and Transport educates more than one thousand full time students as well as hundreds of part time students annually.

Our Services - 3 Simulators

MCAST has invested and set up a number of simulators, including a state of the art Bridge simulator, GMDSS radio communications equipment and ECDIS simulators.

In addition, the Maritime Centre offers STCW ancillary short courses and licenses required to operate sea craft in local waters. These include licences for owners and operators of all kinds of boats. Other short courses are intended for port workers and local maritime entities where a significant training level is required.

Furthermore MCAST offers a suite of courses developed specifically to cater for the super yacht industry and marketed internationally under the exclusive PROCREW label. This offering consists of a trio of full Advanced Diploma courses in the areas of Deck Operations – Yachts, Marine Engineering – Yachts and Yacht Interior and Hospitality Operations. These courses are delivered in both face-to-face and in blended learning modes.

The CMS offers training incorporating all possible modes of instruction including full time, part time, blended and distance learning modes to suit the needs of each particular student. The Deck training commences with the Diploma in Deck Operations after which students can opt to progress to the Advanced Diploma in Deck Operations.

This Advanced Diploma is a flagship program which consists of a period of onshore technical training combined with an additional 12 month sea training for the students to be approved as STCW Officer In Charge of Navigational Watch. This Advanced Diploma will qualify students with the Certificate Of Competency (Unlimited) issued by the Shipping Directorate of Transport Malta Authority. Further training also offered at MCAST leads to higher rankings such as the Chief Mate and the Master Mariner thus achieving the ultimate qualification, namely that of ship Master. The Maritime Centre also offers Marine Engineering courses including the Advanced Diploma in Marine engineering and the Bachelor of Science degree (Hons) in Marine Engineering.

The CentrE

The centre is equipped with the latest equipment in terms of simulators, workshops, and systems. The centre also owns various vessels including specialised rescue boats, through which hands on training is conducted in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. This enables students to train through the use of the latest equipment which ensures that the educational experience at MCAST is the best maritime education possible.
